HYPLife: Fall Digest 2022

HYPLife

Fall Digest 2022

EDITOR'S NOTE

WELCOME BACK!

Dear Readers,

Kalo Mina! Goodbye September, Hello October!

Fall is a transitional season known for the vibrant colors and festivities that pave the way for the transition to the stark winter months. It’s the perfect time to “turn a new leaf” and seek out new opportunities — training, networking, a new hobby or routine. More important, it’s a great time to let go of negative moments in your path, to allow yourself to transform and improve, to become the better person you’re destined to be.

Philo4Thought’s Annual Founder’s Day Celebration will launch on October 10th with the kickoff of our Annual Membership Drive (50% off all memberships).

As always, details about major upcoming events are listed along with advisory tips and resources. Our goal is to educate, inspire and empower our readers and viewers!

Have a question or topic you’d like addressed in a future video or newsletter? Please send your feedback through the chat box at the bottom of the screen or email us at info@philo4thought.org.

Relax and enjoy this month’s issue of #HYPLife!
Please share with friends, family and colleagues!
Best wishes for the month ahead!

MINDFULNESS TIPS

Top Tips for Transformational Decision Making

True and lasting transformation requires three things: Confidence, commitment and faith.

  • How Do I Know I’m Making Good Choices?
    • Understand Yourself. Know what it is that you want and commit to it.
    • Trust Yourself. Have confidence in your personal process. You may not need the traditional path that others have in mind for you. Trust yourself to make the choices that are best for you.
    • Have Faith in Yourself. Have faith that you have taking the time to map your way out and are now ready to collect the wisdom and experience you need to pave the way to the future you want.
  • How Do I Raise My Value?
    • We’re born with value and potential. Even the most basic students of philosophy learn that all human beings are unique and that every person can find ways to flourish and fulfill their potential.
    • No one can give or take value from you. Often times a person can feel less than worthy, either due to a self-imposed restriction or because the person has been in a negative or toxic environment for a significant period of time. The truth, however, is that no one can take or give you value unless you give them permission to do so.
    • Raise your skills without obstructing your own path. A good way to gain a sense of affirmation that we are smart or skilled is to learn a new skill or hobby. Having said this, some individuals risk falling into the trap of using additional coursework as obstacles to their progression. This may either mean that the person is uncertain or unhappy, which can lead to depression, low self-worth, and other related issues. A person can have countless degrees and still have no sense of self-worth. Certificates and accolades don’t make one a better person. Goodness exists within every human being, at one’s very core; one just has to look internally to find and unlock it.
    • Raise awareness and self-appreciation through mindfulness exercises. In previous issues we recommend simple exercises like the creation of a Fulfillment List and other meditative activities that encourage self-reflection and self-discovery.

More Mindfulness Tips

  • Understand & Respect Your Past. It’s important to understand the good and challenging aspects of your family, your own upbringing, your education, and so on.
  • Simplify Your Present. Redirect your energy to remove or overcome obstacles to achieve lasting progress.
  • Actively Work Towards A Sustainable Future. Make choices that maximize your personal gifts; let go of anger, fear, anxiety and excuses you’ve made in the past.
  • Choose to appreciate what you bring to the world and  keep moving forward!

Helpful Resources

  • Take a workshop to explore an interest. (Free or low-cost courses are available online.)
      • FREE Assessments are available at Philo4Thought! Click Here.
      • Personal Development Courses.  Explore a new skill or hobby. Learning a language or new skill (cooking, gardening, etc.) can help to unlock your potential by taking your mind off the every day.
      • Professional Development Courses. Gain a better grasp of a skill you need for your current or desired job.
      • Earn a supplementary certificate to advance in your current or desired career path.
      • Meet with a reliable career coach when planning any type of transition (college-to-career, corporate to entrepreneurial, etc.).
      • Expand your horizons through positive and proactive networking.

CAREER MENTORING CORNER

Mindfulness Tips: Company Culture

  • Mindful job hunting saves the job hunter a great deal of needless stress and shoe leather!
  • When looking for a job, be sure you have a deep understanding of the company culture.
  • Understanding company culture helps you know whether the place to which you’re applying will be a good match for you. The core goals and missions of a company you work for should reflect your own core values to ensure that you will feel needed and productive within the environment where you will be spending a significant percent of your time.
  • Understanding company culture helps you prepare materials (resume, cover letter, interview responses) that will ensure you get a job in a company you like and respect.
  • Don’t fall for the hype. Many companies fail to make their goals and missions clear. Consider whether companies that are unclear with their basic core values is a good fit for you.

MINDFULNESS TIPS

Top Tips to Choosing a Sustainable Career Path

Crafting a sustainable career that can carry you through good as well as challenging times is absolutely necessary in 2022.

  • What is a “Sustainable Career Path” is and why it is desirable?
    • Sustainable career paths and choices are lasting and endure over time,  typically to the conclusion of one’s work-life cycle.
    • A sustainable career path is connected with one’s Life Mission. It is meaningful, flexible and durable enough to  grow with a person as he/she gains training, experience and skills.
    • A sustainable career path does not refer to a “green” sustainability career involving environmental mission statements, ecological research and so on.
  • What are your core values?
    • Consider the things you do that define who you are.
    • Competencies: Think about the things you are good at doing. Make a Competency List.
    • Fulfillment: Think of activities and tasks that make you feel positive about yourself and the world around you, regardless of whether or not you are good at them or not. Make a Fulfillment List.
    • Training: Finally, consider the gaps in your training or skills that may be needed to improve your ability to accomplish the tasks on your Fulfillment List.
    • These form the seeds of your Life Mission, which then becomes crafted from here.
  • Helpful Resources:

March Mindfulness Tips

  • Understand & Respect Your Past. It’s important to understand the good and challenging aspects of your family, your own upbringing, your education, and so on.
  • Simplify Your Present. Redirect your energy to remove or overcome obstacles to achieve lasting progress.
  • Actively Work Towards A Sustainable Future. Make choices that maximize your personal gifts; let go of anger, fear, anxiety and excuses you’ve made in the past.
  • Choose to appreciate what you bring to the world and  keep moving forward!

MINDFULNESS TIPS

Top Tips to Assessing Your Potential

  • Schedule one day a month to assess your goals.
    • Unlocking your potential requires calm and steady self examination of your life and goals.
    • Take the time to assess your values! To stay on track, grow closer to those who hold a positive and productive approach to work and life. Distance yourself from people and things that are toxic and draining, which lead to procrastination and other poor habits.

    • Meet with a reliable career coach when planning any type of transition (college-to-career, corporate to entrepreneurial, etc.).
  • Expand your horizons through positive and proactive networking.
    • READ. The most important thing to have in your toolbox is something that’s interesting. and relevant to talk about. Educate yourself by reading at least one book a month and a few journals (one professional, one about a topic of personal interest and one (reliable) newspaper). Avoid propaganda pieces.
    • CONNECT. Connect through reliable networks to meet new mentors, colleagues and potential employers. Start off with your college Alumni Association and LinkedIn. Build from there.
    • FOLLOW UP & BUILD RAPPORT. Don’t just contact a person or like their posts when you need something from them. Contact them a bit more frequently to say hello, ask about them, wish them holiday greetings or a simple “Kalo Mina!” and you will see that your contact over time is appreciated much more than the irregular utilitarian contact.
    • VETTING. In this day and age it’s important to be prudent and only accept connections and opportunities from trusted resources.  Not sure how to discern whether a person or resource is legit.? We can help. Email us. If. an individual claims to be part of your Alumni network, you can contact Alumni services to verify….

3-Step Mindfulness Tip for Better Work-Life Balance

  • Adapt ONE positive productivity habit. Make sure that it’s realistic and sustainable.
  • Remove ONE negative person or habit from your life. Redirect your energy to remove obstacles that delay or hinder progress.
  • Actively CHOOSE yourself. To make progress in your life you must love and understand yourself and your gifts; you must let go of anger, fear and anxiety and CHOOSE to appreciate what you bring to the world.

MINDFULNESS TIPS

Habits to Adapt for a Happier Life

  • Bad Habits to Shake Off in 2022!
    • Don’t procrastinate or be passive aggressive! Face your stress directly and honestly.
    • Don’t get lost in the loop of your worries! Be mindful and appreciate the present.
    • Don’t hold on to old guilt, arguments and grudges! They are unproductive and prevent you from achieving happiness. Forgive yourself and others.
  • Boost Your Own Happiness Through Heightened Self Awareness
    • Value yourself and spend your time wisely! Direct your day with clear goals. Prioritize one activity per day.
    • Prioritize and respect loved ones! Most people tend think that we have more time to be with our loved ones, putting the management of stress. at work or school ahead of the people and things that mean the most to us and make us happy, but we should adopt the European “Work to Live” model rather than the “Live to Work” (or “Live to Stress”) model….
    • Take a daily mini break! Allow yourself enjoy life with a sense of wonder. Spend 10-15 minutes daily to take a short walk, read a new article, take. a short tour of your local museum or shops.
    • Understand and embody your values! Be the person who acts, not the one who complains.
    • Understand and transform your negative memories or experiences!  Even when something negative happens to us, we have the choice to drown in self-pity and chagrin or to use these moments as building blocks to become more productive and improve the world around us so that others are spared the same struggle or suffering.
    • Declutter! Make space in your day and space. Simplify your life by letting go of things that clutter your schedule and environment.
    • Evaluate your goals on a regular basis! Set a monthly reminder to make sure you’re on track with the achievement of life goals (and see if they’re still what you want).
    • Smile! Put yourself in a better mood instantly by smiling or making a friend smile.
  • Boost and Promote Happiness Through Positive Thoughts & Actions Towards Others
    • Assume (and search for) the best in others! It’s so easy to see the flaws in everything, to turn our noses up at things that are not “up to our standards,” but consider that there is a seed of goodness in every creature and every thing… and be determined to recognize it.
    • Perform a random act of kindness! It doesn’t have to be a grand gesture or pricey gift. Practice offering a kind word or compliment to someone when the opportunity presents itself. Lend a hand to someone in need. You know how this works. 😉
    • Think before you speak! Express your thoughts in positive, productive ways. If you’re about to say something negative, stop, count to 10 and think of how this will impact the person to whom your words are directed.

Mindfulness Tips

  • Adapt ONE positive habit to increase your productivity or work-life balance. Make sure that it’s realistic and sustainable.
  • Drop ONE negative habit that is affecting your productivity or work-life balance. Consider one thing that you do which you or others see as an obstacle to your ability to move forward in work and in life.

HOLIDAY SURVIVAL TIPS

Top Holiday Survival Skills

Cut back on the physical and mental stress of the holiday season!

  • Create a Relaxing Home Environment. To start off with a relaxing mindset it’s important to maintain a space that makes you feel festive and positive.
    • Organize & Declutter. Give things you don’t use to those in need.
    • Screen-Free Time. Commit to turning off your screens and devices to enjoy the time allocated to your family and friends.
    • Create a Positive Holiday Tradition. If you didn’t grow up with a holiday tradition it’s ok to start a new one with your friends and loved ones. The main thing is to make sure that it isn’t something that will add to the stress of the season.
  • Rest & Recharge. Take time to rest and care for yourself; don’t feel forced to do and attend everything.
    • Eat properly. If you have dietary restrictions, stick to foods that you know and work around the rest. Avoid drive-throughs with junk food (the type that is TOO readily available when you’re out shopping). Eat before leaving home and carry a healthy snack to enjoy while you’re shopping.
    • Hydrate! Drink plenty of water. Beware of the double whammy (dehydration and liquid calories) of heavy, sugary holiday beverages!
    • Mini Fitness Routine. Prioritize your health. Get at least 10-15 minutes of exercise daily (even just a simple stretch, daily stairs or short walk). Get at least a five-hour rest cycle.
    • Meditation & Positive Affirmations. Getting ready for a stressful reunion? Have a positive affirmation to keep you in the holiday spirit. Remember that we’re gathering. to celebrate, not to rehash past arguments.
    • Journaling. You may want to keep a small holiday journal — the front half for the positive moments and back to vent a bit if you feel the need.
  • Reduce Shopping Stress. Making your list and checking it twice? Your naughty and nice mist doesn’t have to be as long as Santa’s.
    • Stock up on simple hostess gifts so you don’t show up to a party empty handed.
    • Finding Discounts, Friendly Haggling & Price Matching. Many shops will price match on products or offer discounts to educators, students and first responders. It doesn’t hurt to ask. Just keep the conversation friendly rather than pressing for a deal.
  • Paced Socializing. Limit the number of events you choose to attend. If you’re hosting a party, plan the menu and details out in advance. Having a prefab menu with a few impromptu touches tends to work best. If you’re traveling, pack in advance.
  • Tag Team. Ask for help when you need it. Perhaps it’s to remind you of your 10-minute walk, perhaps it’s to navigate social stress of parties or shopping. Whatever the issue, remember that it’s ok to ask for a hand or a +1 for your holiday adventures!

6 Things Productive People Do on Weekends

  • Disconnect. Commit to turning off your screens and devices.
  • Exercise. Whether it’s an intensive workout, a simple walk, or “chaircercise,” a bit of exercise at least on the weekends is good for your overall mental, emotional and physical wellbeing. (If you can manage to exercise at any level 3 or more days a week, even better.)
  •  Meditate & Reflect. Take a moment to think about your positive contributions and accomplishments from the past week and give yourself a pat on the back. Making note of any areas that need improvement and commit to making at least one major improvement in the week ahead.
  • (Re)organize. Take a few minutes moment to review and organize or reorganize your purse, desk and space. It gives a fresh visual boost to kick off the week ahead.
  • Recharge. Take time to rest and care for yourself, especially if you race through a full and hectic week.
  • Socialize. Whether it’s a phone call or an activity, it’s important to stay connected with those you care about.

Mindfulness Tips

  • MAINTAINING THE POSITIVE DURING NEGATIVE TIMES: Staying positive when facing a negative trial is not an easy thing to do, even for those of us who tend to be optimistic about things. Continuing from our previous messages on Mindfulness, having a full understanding of the range of your skills and deficiencies you can carve positive opportunities for learning and growth out of every challenge. Don’t dwell on the negative and talk yourself out of doing something that is important to you just because people around you are negative. Don’t allow your decisions to hinge on the opinions of others. The only person who knows that something is right for you… is you. The only one who can truly determine whether you remain in the darkness or pull through it… is you. Focus on your goal, believe in yourself and move forward. Being confident, honest, diligent and wise in the path you choose helps you to maintain a positive and hopeful attitude that will lead you to success.
  • LEAVING THE NEGATIVE BEHIND:  While it’s important to connect with and understand others, it’s equally important not to become a slave to the negative opinions of others (which may not stem from their genuine interest in our wellbeing). Trust yourself and understand who your true friends and colleagues are. Make the conscious decision to hear others out, but also learn to filter out people who only bring negativity to your life so you don’t end up on a destructive and negative path in work and in life.
  • EFFECTING POSITIVE CHANGE: Be attentive! Seek out positive opportunities and solutions, even in hard times. Support the efforts of others to do the same.

October 2021

Home is not a place, it's a feeling.

EDITOR'S NOTE

KALO MINA! WELCOME BACK!

October brings with it the crisp fresh energy of the autumn season. This month we celebrate various things including the formal foundation of the Philo4Thought Hellenic Mentoring Initiative, which has been running 12 years strong to help advise and direct young professionals from all walks of life to the resources they need to succeed in work and in life. We thank St. John’s University Athletics Department for their recognition of our Founding CEO as Professor of the Month and hope to hear of the continued strides of all the students and young professionals in our network.

The theme for this month is “Home” — that feeling that no matter where you are you’re able to adapt to life’s transitions and challenges, taking them in stride and helping others to do the same.

As always, we have various inspirational readings and special announcements to share! We invite you to join in reading this month’s issue of #HYPLife to learn more about them. Our goal is to educate, inspire and empower our readers and viewers!

Mindfulness Tips

  • IMPORTANCE OF REALISTIC PERSPECTIVES: Continuing from last month’s theme, while it’s important to stay positive and confident about yourself, it’s equally important to be realistic and know when something is not a good fit for you. Focus on understanding what is best for you as well as your community. Be confident, honest, diligent and wise in the path you choose.
  • EFFECTING POSITIVE CHANGE: The best leaders, mentors and instructors know how to effect positive change in their lives and in the lives of others.  Seek out positive opportunities and solutions, even in hard times, and support the efforts of others to do the same.
  • UNDERSTANDING OTHERS: Take the time to try to understand the perspective and position of others. We’re all at different crossroads in our lives, and yet we are all called upon to function together at some point, which we cannot do if we do not know how to connect with and understand others. Make the conscious choice to hear others out.
